Keith Duncan closing show at CANARY Gallery

Big congrats to local artist Keith Duncan who has had a very successful run with his Prospect 2 showing at the Healing Center. Word on the street is that these pieces are now sold, so the only way you can get some new Kieth Duncan artwork is to come by the Canary Gallery on Thursday, November 3rd from 6-9 - and it's Keith's Birthday!

Keith straddles the line between mockery and public education on themes of race and class.

I am honored to have local artist Keith Duncan showing the last official solo show at Canary, and of 2011. I have admired his work over the years, and today i got a sneak peak at his new series which will be up at CANARY during Art for Arts Sake 2011, opening October 1st.

Keith straddles the line between mockery and public education on themes of race and class.

New Orleans photographer Zack Smith, known for his striking, storytelling, environmental portraiture of local and nationally known musicians, is unveiling a body of work begun almost 12 years ago. Smith began his discovery of photography by doing street photography around Louisiana, as well as his travels around the country, where he has amassed a collection of stunning straight street photography and panoramic multi-exposure Holga photographs. "Shoot for the Wall" echoes Smith's photographic ideology that the substance, subject, and composition that is seen with the eye and the full frame negative need not be captured unless you intend to put it on the wall without apology.

Now that the Photo Nola opening night is over, I'd like to invite all art supporters and lovers to stop by the Canary Gallery for a view of Michael Donnor's exquisitely original photographs.Each of Donnor's tectured photos tell their own story, allowing the viewer's imagination to soar to fantastic new heights!

Michael Donnor: Photo NOLA and Art Talk at The Canary Gallery

A VISUAL EXPLORATION OF THE BLURRED TRUTH OF SELF.

This project is my exploration from behind the stage of the greatest show of all... us. It is

my view of false projections, fortresses of a facade, and the egos that stand upon them.

The fragile truth that is covered up can be many things: a secret best not shared, an event

best forgotten, a failure best not remembered, or perhaps a dead dream that will not rest.

Whichever the case, they are all a part of us that we will carry; the past that is a silent

moan.

The process begins with the negative; the decision of how to destroy it and decay it is

about looking further than when the shutter was released. The prints are silver gelatin;

archivally toned in selenium, and uniquely stained in tea. They are signed, dated, titled

and editioned in ink by the artist own hand. The edges are then burned and beeswax is

applied in layers, finishing each piece from conception to print.

They are one of a kind within an edition; from the tones to the lettering, burning and wax

finish. No two prints are the same.

Tony Nozero planted ten of his colorful raw acrylic paintings in the Canary Gallery for his opening night on Saturday, August 7th...and rocked White Linen Night. His theme is basically oil and our abuse of it in our lifestyle... a real eye- opener. His show will be up until the end of September so anyone who didn't get down for the opening will hopefully head down soon.
We also have Derek Nehrbass' pieces up until the end of August. His bar napkins and Fema trailers are the best eye candy you'll find in this town.

He was awarded a residency at The Sante Fe Art Institute in 2006 as well as grants from the Joan Mitchell and Pollock Krasner Foundations. His paintings are privately collected and he has shown in galleries all over the world.

The CANARY Gallery is pleased to present to New Orleans, the first large collection of prints and drawings from Lafayette, LA native Derek Nehrbass. Nehrbass' view of New Orleans both pre and post-K is seen through sketches on bar napkins to do-it-yourself paper models of FEMA trailers. Nehrbass' complex woodcut about piled up shotguns called "Babel" as well as large scale drawing transposing Dante's Inferno over the lower 9th Ward New Orleans, delve into the complexity of the city's struggle and shifting evoltution as told through pen and ink sketches. Most of these sketches were culled from Nehrbass' large collection of old bar napkins that he has collected from his many patrons over the years, bartending at the late night hip bar, The Saint.

Myth and Translation

Ayanna Bassiouni’s multi-media and textured work seek to discover the relations of the many faceted roles that women play in cultural progression. Women have been depicted in their daily activities as deities, represented as multi-armed spirits that take on androgynous forms. That has lead Bassiouni to travel to Europe to explore and create upon one of the most controversial and underestimated figures, The Black Madonna.

“My intention was to document her fall from grace but in my encounters with cultures that held her in the highest regard I found her silence to be the most powerful statement. Her unassuming expression has gained so much momentum through the reverence of all the women that dictate the direction of symbolism and translation in their household,” Bassiouni

What happens when you cross the old-fashioned risqué glamour of turn of the century burlesque with the wild imagination of the most colorful artistic duo in the South? Well, you get an exhibition of seductive paintings and collages that radiate the sensuality and over ripeness of an Edwardian bordello.

Artists Louis St.Lewis (who’s works are in both the Ogden Museum of Southern Art and the New Orleans Museum of Art) and Sean Yseult (Musician, Parson’s alumni) have teamed up again for their 5th collaborative exhibition featuring eye popping images based on Yseult’s intimate photographs of New Orleans’ own 21st century burlesque review, Fleur de Tease.

Trixie Minx, Madame Mystere, Bella Blue, Rory Wrey and the other talented ladies of the troupe have, in the hands of St.Lewis and Yseult, been transformed into artworks that are both avant-garde and immediately recognizable, channeling the spirits of masterworks as varied as the dancers of Degas, the languid beauties of Red Light District photographer E.J. Bellocq and the erotic contortions of painters Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt. The show features a little bump-and-grind, a little feather and shoe leather, and a little T & A for connoisseurs of both fine and erotic arts.

I want to urge you all to attend Heidi Domangue's art opening on October 3rd.

I think this show will be one of the best we have had at THE CANARY Gallery. Heidi is one of the most prolific, talented, and culturally inspired artists i have ever met or had the joy of calling friend. She is inspiring to me, and the community she works and creates in. I do hope you can attend her opening on October 3rd at CANARY.

Heidi is committed to educating us all... To paraphrase her:

'This series is all about saving the wetlands, the fight of the animals to keep it alive, the unrecognized heroes of the marsh, and the relationships of the animals that no one thinks of.'

But, it goes bigger than than. Here in Louisiana we have lost over 38 million square yards of wetlands, and that doesn't seem to be stopping. This series she has made raises the delicate question - with all the land that is dissapearing, where will all the nutria go? Where will all the Pelicans go? Right now the fight is on to save their own habitat from washing away....thus we have:

3D BAYOU BATTLE

For this show, Heidi has experimented non-stop with creating her own unique color palette for painting in 3D. She has donned the traditional 3D glasses to paint these amazing bayou confrontations, and there's only one way to see them...

CANARY was donated 75 3D glasses from American Optics for this show, and it's one you don't want to miss.

CANARY Gallery is giving the New Orleans public one more opportunity to view Zack Smith's newest portrait show, Portrait(s) - on Tuesday, September 1st from 6pm-8pm. Cocktails will be served.

From the streets and swamps of Louisiana, to the cozy backstages of the Voodoo Music Experience, Zack Smith creates comfortable confines that elevate his unique style of portraiture. There is a subtle, yet strong connection between subject and photographer, a statement that Smith holds highest. Whether the background is a custom backdrop by Flavor Paper, a vine laden swamp, or street corner, Smith's subjects connect with them and in turn, the viewer.

Portrait(s) will feature a selection of 4x5 shot portraits of artists that played the Preservation Hall Tent at the 2008 Voodoo Music Experience, and some of his recently shot portraits. Deacon John, Alec Ounsworth (of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah), Ben Jaffe (Preservation Hall), and The Noisician Coalition are just a few of the new images you will see at the opening.

Zack Smith is a photographer, musician, and educator living and creating in New Orleans. He is the curator of CANARY Gallery in New Orleans, LA.
